The Reed Flower That Led to Liberation

Long ago, on the banks of the Chandabhāgā River in the Himalayas, there lived a beautiful kinnaree with shining golden wings. She spent her days among blooming reed flowers, clear rivers, and peaceful forests.

One morning, while walking beside the river, she saw a brilliant golden light shining through the trees. The forest became quiet. Even the wind seemed to stop.

Filled with curiosity and respect, she followed the light. There, beneath a great tree, sat a Paccekabuddha, a Self-Enlightened Buddha who had overcome all defilements and found perfect peace.

As soon as she saw Him, faith and joy arose in her heart. She wanted to show her respect, so she carefully picked a beautiful reed flower from the riverbank.
The kinnaree knelt before the Paccekabuddha and offered the flower with both hands. Then she bowed deeply with sincere devotion. The flower was simple, but her faith was pure and genuine.

After making the offering, she wished to continue doing good deeds and following the path of wisdom.

When her life as a kinnaree ended, the power of that good deed brought great rewards. She was reborn in Tāvatiṃsa Heaven and became the chief queen of Sakka, the King of the Devas, for thirty-six lifetimes.

In many other lives, she enjoyed great happiness and honor. She became the chief queen of Universal Monarchs ten times and the queen of many righteous kings.
Because she continued to do good and stayed close to wise people, she never fell into the lower realms. For ninety-four aeons, she was never reborn in hell, as a hungry ghost, as an asura, or as an animal.

Life after life, she kept building merit through generosity, virtue, and wisdom.
Finally, during the time of Gotama Buddha, she was born as a human being. After hearing the Buddha’s teachings, she left the household life and became a bhikkhunī.

She practiced meditation with great effort and developed deep wisdom. In time, she completely destroyed greed, hatred, and delusion.

She attained arahantship and became known as the venerable Naḷamālikā Therī.
Looking back on her past lives, she remembered that ninety-four aeons earlier she had offered a single reed flower to a Paccekabuddha. Because of that good deed and the many wholesome actions that followed, she enjoyed countless blessings and never fell into the lower realms.

Her story teaches us that even a small act of goodness can bring great results when it is done with sincere faith. But we must continue doing good, avoid bad influences, and keep following the path of wisdom.

From one simple flower offering came heavenly happiness, many fortunate lives, and finally the highest goal—Nibbāna.

Such is the power of faith, merit, and a heart devoted to goodness.
