Did you know that Door County has lost 90% of its native cave-dwelling bats due to white-nose syndrome? Wisconsin's four native species of cave-dwelling bats - the big brown bat, the little brown bat, the northern long-eared bat, and the tricolored bat - spend their winters hibernating in cave sites called hibernacula. They may seem scary to some, but a single bat can eat 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in an hour!
Protecting habitat is a critical component of helping restore bat populations in Wisconsin. Bats rely on healthy wetlands and forests, like those found at The Ridges, for food and shelter throughout the summer.
