AI-generated voice clones now need under a minute of public audio to produce a convincing fake. A phone call asking for an urgent wire transfer can sound exactly like the person you'd expect to make it.

The fix isn't more training videos. It's a verification rule that lives outside the channel the request came in on - a callback to a known number, a code word, or a Slack confirmation. Build it once, drill it twice a year, and the deepfake becomes a non-event.

IT teams around the world walked into the same disaster. CrowdStrike had pushed an automatic update overnight that crashed Windows machines on boot. By breakfast, around 8.5 million computers were unreachable.

The businesses that recovered fastest had already done the boring work with their IT: documented admin credentials stored somewhere reachable offline, a boot-into-safe-mode procedure rehearsed before they needed it, and a clear chain of who calls who at 5am.

There will be another July 19. Only a question of when.
