Please let the Village Board know your opinion on the planned changes to residency requirements for seats on the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals, and beyond that please consider expressing your interest in serving on one of these boards. The mayor’s assertions in this article and his motivations for proposing this measure are highly questionable. As a member of the ZBA myself, I have seen that members of both boards have always had a wide range of qualifications, and the three individuals he refers to as “unqualified” are unquestionably more qualified than many who have served or currently serve - experience serving on similar boards, experience examining land use questions, extensive experience working with the Village's code. The assertion that they are too partisan is also absurd, given the prominent positions several current board members hold in the local Republican party. There also seems to be an assertion that Nathan Ward was replaced due to poor attendance – if that were the case, many other current board members would have already been replaced who I can guarantee you have far worse attendance records.
I would encourage any Village resident with interest to consider applying for one of these seats. Attend an upcoming meeting and see if you feel you could do the job. And make sure the Village Board knows that it is their responsibility to keep this community’s future in this community’s hands.
The Village Board of Trustees meets to consider the matter tonight, Monday January 26, at 7pm.

Ballston Spa to discuss a change in residency rules for land-use boards A change in residency laws would expand the pool of land-use board applicants from a population of more than 5,100 to more than 47,700.

A year ago today, I was in Washington serving on the USAID Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance’s Yemen response. The previous weeks had been hectic, as we navigated a series of airstrikes on ports vital for delivery of humanitarian aid, and then plans for the imposition of sanctions on a Yemeni bank which would directly impact the American-provided funds of our partners. On January 20th, we were as busy as usual (though working from home due the office’s proximity to inauguration events), and I can honestly say that every individual at the agency treated the transition as business as usual. Everyone was ready to carry on our work in a way that supported the incoming President’s agenda, making both America and the world around it safer and more prosperous. It took a day or two for the chaos to set in and for us all to begin to understand how bad things could get.

Thank you to everyone who trusted me with your vote, and my deepest gratitude to all of you who helped with or contributed to the campaign. Among the primary reasons I ran was the number of people who told me they would not do so because of the extreme tone of Village politics. Most people just don’t think it is worth it to become the target of these attacks. I hope if I have done anything with my campaign I have encouraged those people to give this a second consideration.
