Every great tradition begins with a single note.
And on Cape Cod, that first note has just been sounded.

The Corporal Nicholas Xiarhos Young Marines have launched a new Taps Program, giving young people the opportunity to learn one of our nation’s most meaningful military traditions—the live sounding of Taps at veterans’ funerals and memorial ceremonies.

Those 24 notes may last less than a minute, but they carry generations of gratitude.

Since the Civil War, Taps has become America’s final musical farewell to those who served. It isn’t simply a song. It is a promise that a life of service will be remembered with dignity, honor, and respect.

Teaching a young person to play Taps is about far more than learning the right notes. It teaches discipline. It builds character. It instills respect for those who came before them. And one day, it gives them the privilege of standing before a grieving family and offering a final tribute that no recording can ever replace.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Taps for Veterans volunteer Joan Hendel—U.S. Army veteran and former Boston Conservatory musician—for generously volunteering her time and extraordinary talent to mentor these future buglers. Your dedication is helping ensure this sacred tradition lives on for the next generation. 🫡🎺

Today, the program has just one donated trumpet, shared among every student during lessons.

Sometimes, the most meaningful recognition arrives in a simple handwritten card. we do what we do.

Not for applause. Not for attention. Not for recognition.
We do it because every veteran deserves to be honored with dignity, respect, and the unmistakable sound of a live sounding of Taps.

There is something deeply personal about those 24 notes. Since the Civil War, Taps has marked the final farewell of those who served our nation. It is more than military tradition—it is a final salute, a lasting expression of a grateful nation’s thanks.

Even in the midst of their own grief, they took the time to thank our volunteer bugler for honoring Richard Hayman—a proud U.S. Navy veteran, devoted father, and a man whose life of service deserved to be remembered with honor.

Richard was honored on July 10, 2025, what would have been his birthday. There could be no greater tribute than gathering in remembrance, hearing live Taps, and knowing his service would never be forgotten.

To the Hayman family, thank you for allowing Taps for Veterans to stand beside you on such a meaningful day. Your kind words remind us that even the smallest act of service can leave a lasting impact.
And to every volunteer bugler, donor, supporter, and advocate—you are the reason these moments happen. Every mission you make possible ensures another veteran receives the farewell they earned.

This Is Why Taps for Veterans exists.
Since the Civil War, Taps has been one of our nation’s most sacred military traditions—a final salute that speaks when words no longer can. Those 24 notes are more than music. They are gratitude, remembrance, and a promise that a life of service will never be forgotten.

We believe every veteran deserves to hear those notes performed live.
Not because it’s simply tradition.

🎺 That’s why thousands of volunteer buglers across America answer the call, providing the live sounding of Taps at military funerals and memorial ceremonies—always at no cost to the family.

🇺🇸 Two moments. One date. A generation forever changed. — July 8

History sometimes whispers before it roars.

On July 8, 1959, Maj. Dale R. Buis and Master Sgt. Chester M. Ovnand were killed during an attack on a U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group compound at Bien Hoa, South Vietnam. They are widely recognized as the first Americans killed by hostile enemy action during the era.

Just six years later, on July 8, 1965, the Service Medal was established to recognize the men and women who served in Vietnam and its surrounding waters and airspace. For millions of veterans, that medal became more than a ribbon—it became a lasting symbol of duty, sacrifice, and service during one of America’s most challenging conflicts.

Those two events are forever connected.
One reminds us where the sacrifice began.

The other reminds us that every man and woman who answered the call deserves to have that service remembered.

At Taps for Veterans, we believe remembrance should never fade. Every time the 24 notes of Taps are sounded live, they honor not only one veteran, but an entire generation that served when their nation called.

Today, we remember Maj. Buis, Master Sgt. Ovnand, and every Vietnam veteran who carried the burden of that war.
