It flexes, it bends, it stretches, and releases. A LOT of metal drumming has only hard corners; all patterns are played verbatim all the way up to the next change or fill. I like to smooth those edges into contours by letting my pattern flex shape just before the actual change or fill starts. And when I want a hard corner, you’ll feel the intentionality more clearly, and that gives me another dimension in my arrangement and orchestration to play with.
