The State Theater of Maryland
Meet the visionary behind (pray): nicHi douglas
For creator and director nicHi douglas, art has never fit neatly into a single box. Their work lives at the intersection of choreography, writing, directing, movement, music, and storytelling—creating experiences that are as immersive as they are transformative.
(pray) brings all of those artistic practices together in one powerful choreopoem, blending dance, theater, poetry, ritual, and song into a celebration of Black femme spirituality, faith, and liberation.
In this behind-the-scenes interview, nicHi shares how their deeply experimental and collaborative approach to making art shaped every aspect of the production—and why (pray) invites audiences into something far beyond a traditional theater experience.
Watch the interview and get ready to experience (pray), running June 13–July 5 at Baltimore Center Stage.

What if going to the theatre felt like stepping into a transformative Sunday church service?
In this special interview, writer, director, and choreographer nicHi douglas shares the vision behind (pray)—a theatrical experience designed to move audiences not just emotionally, but spiritually.
Part ritual. Part celebration. Part collective gathering. (pray) invites audiences into a space of music, movement, testimony, release, and radical joy. It's a chance to come together, reflect, rejoice, and leave transformed.
