Our first Clinical Informatics Conference for the Spring 2025 semester will be Thursday, February 6, 12p to 2pm EST.
The Clinical Informatics Conference meets on the first Thursday of each month, 12pm to 2pm, during the Fall and Spring semesters. The conference is part of the Graduate Program in Clinical Informatics through the University of Maryland School of Graduate Studies in collaboration with the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Any interested students and faculty are welcome to participate.

Dr. Perkins is the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) and Senior Director for Clinical Informatics at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa, Florida. Her work focuses on the application of information technology to improve clinical care, with a focus on usability, and research on the implementation science of healthcare IT. She is also a practicing family medicine physician in the center’s Department of Internal Medicine. In addition, she is an Associate Professor and the Interim Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program Director for the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida. Dr. Perkins received her Doctor of Medicine from Florida State University and her Master of Business Administration from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. As to her policy-related efforts, she has an appointment on the Health IT Advisory Committee (HITAC) of the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy (ASTP)/ Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health IT.

We offer a 12-credit Graduate Certificate and a 34-credit Master of Science in Clinical Informatics. All courses are presented in a hyflex environment, allowing students to complete all requirements online. Our program was designed to serve a broad range of healthcare professionals, including physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, biologists, computer scientists, and others.
The program is a joint effort between the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). The core faculty are practicing physicians from the School of Medicine who are board certified in Clinical Informatics, assisted by other faculty with training in Computer Science, Data Science, and Epidemiology.
Our curriculum focuses on biomedical data, clinical processes, and computational systems, which students will apply to the practice of medicine to enhance health outcomes, improve patient care, and strengthen the clinician-patient relationship. The program also covers the latest data science tools, machine learning techniques, and methods for big data processing. Coursework also addresses leadership, professionalism, ethics, bias, and social determinants of health.
