Thanks to everyone who came out last night to hear MaDeja Leverett, PhD candidate in History Johns Hopkins University Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences!

Her presentation centered on close readings of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) and Louisa Picquet, the Octoroon: A Tale of Southern Slave Life (1861), both of which illuminate the particular vulnerabilities faced by Black girls in the antebellum South, and the ways in which individuals, families, and communities sought to preserve their innocence in the face of anti-Black racism, sexism, and ageism.
