This September, Equinox's very own Recreation Director, Natalie Stark, LRT, CTRS, embarked on an incredible journey with students and their families in collaboration with Breakwater Expeditions, and it's a story we can't wait to share with you! 🚣♀️
For six unforgettable days, participants dove headfirst into a sea kayaking adventure amidst the stunning San Juan Islands off the picturesque coast of Washington State. The adventure began with a ferry ride from Anacortes to the enchanting Orcas Island, setting the stage for the following awe-inspiring experiences. From there, they embarked on a mesmerizing sea kayaking expedition to the breathtaking Sucia Island, where they camped under the stars for three magical nights. To cap off this extraordinary adventure, participants had the chance to explore the vibrant cityscape of downtown Seattle, adding a perfect blend of urban excitement to their nature-filled journey.
One participating parent was left speechless, saying, "It was so incredible that I have no words to describe it to my husband." Another participant shared, "It was undeniably challenging, but I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. It illuminated our progress as a family and highlighted the areas where we still have room to grow."
This transformative experience encompassed everything from navigating the ocean in sea kayaks to uncovering hidden treasures within tide pools, including the elusive Purple Sea Stars.

Just horsin' around! 🐴🤪
Last week, students enjoyed a trail ride during their equine therapy session. We've found that incorporating horse trail rides into our students' routine is an excellent way to enhance their overall well-being. We find solace in the beauty of nature while forging a unique connection with these majestic animals. Whether it's a leisurely ride through scenic landscapes or a structured equine therapy session, the benefits of equine therapy are well-documented and can be a source of immense joy and healing.

"[Equinox staff] We have fun together...this is about relationships and about connecting." —John Moore, Equinox Executive Director
When staff members have healthy relationships built on trust, respect, empathy, and a few belly laughs, it helps create a safe and secure environment where adolescents can model those relationships, allowing them to begin to heal and open up.
The core of our programming is human connection. 🤗
Meaningful connections and healthy relationships provide emotional support, reduce feelings of loneliness, and contribute to overall mental well-being. We teach our students that the bond we create and share with others serves as a safety net during challenging times and amplifies joy during moments of celebration.
