Picking out rugs and chairs. What’s your favorite combo?
Rugs, again many opinions on the dos and don'ts.
Now that we chatted about rug size lets talk about some helpful placement tips!
Now that you measured your space & have gotten your rug home lets talk about a few placement thoughts:
Living Room: OVERALL BEST TIP (again there are multiple ways to place your furniture with a rug)- all your furniture should be on top of the rug (with some of the rug showing after that furniture has been placed). If this is not possible, at least the front legs should be on the rug (avoid making the 2 legs look like they are hanging on by the skin of their teeth).
Dining Room: OVERALL BEST TIP- your dining room table and chairs should all be placed on top of the rug. You want to be able to sit at the table, slide your chair as if you are getting up from the table & your chair still be on the rug.
Bedroom: OVERALL BEST TIP- your bed & nightstands should sit on top of the rug with overhang on each side of the bed (basically when you get out of bed you want you feet landing on the rug) along with overhang at the end of the bed. For me personally instead of placing the rug 2 feet off the baseboard I started the rug at the end of my nightstands (meaning my nightstand and the headboard area would be on the hardwood floor). This gives me more of an overhang at the end of the bed.
OTHER thoughts: smaller living rooms (meaning you cant walk behind the couch but the rest of the room is rather open)- you can place the rug directly in front of the couch but make sure the chairs you are using on placed on top of the rug or the majority of the chair is placed on the rug.
Next time let's chat about layers, patterns & textures, oh my!

Rugs, so many conversations can be had about the dos & dont’s. Let’s only talk about size for now. Better to buy a larger rug than smaller.
Start by taking the measurement of the room. Next think about the layout of your room & the direction the rug would lay.
A good rule of thumb is measure your room & subtract 2 feet from each measurement. Example: 10’x12’ room - rug size 8’x10’.
Of course, sometimes our room measurements are odd so when this happens pick the rug size that is closest to the size you calculated. Example: 12’x18’ room - rug size 10’x16’ if you can find this size however the most common rug sizes to find that are larger would be 10’x13’ or 9’x12’. Either size could work for this room depending on furniture placement.
Most decorative rugs come in certain sizes but with anything in life you can have it custom made.
