The same Louisiana Democrats crying “racism” today are actively trying to rewrite history and claim Louisiana’s first Black congressman, John Willis Menard, as part of their political legacy; while conveniently leaving out that Menard was a Republican, not a Democrat.

They also ignore that the political forces responsible for removing Black Republicans from power during Reconstruction were Democrats of that era. History should be told honestly, not selectively reshaped for modern political narratives.
