The 1986 State Champions Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay Team

The 1986 Boys 400 Freestyle Relay team set a school, city, and a LHSAA state swimming record during the state preliminary competition with a time of 3:13.72. Swimming on the relay team was Peter O’Konski, John Bull, Chris Williams and David Lichtenstein. This was considered an All-American relay candidate time in 1986. To this day, the school record has not been broken. The relay team won the 400-freestyle relay at the City-Parish High School meet, the LHSAA state meet preliminaries, and the LHSAA State meet finals. During the LHSAA State meet finals, this relay team won by more than a half pool length (3:18.69) with Brother Martin High School coming in second with a time of 3:28.09. Three of the four boys also won their respective individual events. At the City meet, Chris Williams finished first in the 200 free, Peter O’Konski finished first in the 200 I.M. and the 500 free, and David Lichtenstein finished first in the 50 freestyle (new City meet record 21.85) and the 100 freestyle. At the State meet, John Bull was runner up in the 200 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle, Peter O’Konski finished third in the 200 I.M. and fifth in the 500 freestyle, and David Lichtenstein won the 50 freestyle (21.62) and the 100 freestyle (44.61) While the boys swim team finished second overall at the state championship meet, this relay team certainly left their mark on Baton Rouge Magnet High School.
