Louisiana Insurance Market Update: Encouraging Signs as We Head into 2026

There’s some good news for Louisiana policyholders as we head into 2026 — we’re starting to see real progress in both the auto and homeowners insurance markets.

🚗 Auto Insurance:
For the first time since 2020, the average approved auto rate filing in Louisiana is a decrease. More insurers are cutting rates than raising them, accident frequency is down, and several major carriers have reduced premiums multiple times this year.

🏠 Homeowners Insurance:
While homeowners rates remain challenging, the pace of increases has slowed significantly. In 2025, Louisiana saw the lowest average homeowners rate increase since 2020, and some insurers are now filing rate decreases as market conditions stabilize.

📜 Why this is happening:
The Legislature passed meaningful legal and insurance reforms over the past two years. Some of those reforms are just now taking effect, with more rolling out in 2026 and 2027. Early data shows these changes are helping restore competition and stability in the market.

🤝 Credit where it’s due:
I want to thank Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple for his steady leadership and focus on strengthening Louisiana’s insurance marketplace, as well as Governor Jeff Landry for prioritizing insurance reform and supporting policies that encourage competition and accountability. Progress like this requires teamwork, and their efforts are making a difference.

💡 What policyholders should do:
As competition returns, shopping your insurance matters more than ever. Rates vary widely by company, and the free market works best when consumers compare options. Talk to an independent agent, review your coverage, and make sure you’re getting the best value for your family.

We still have work to do — but the trend lines are finally moving in the right direction. I’ll continue fighting for a stronger, more competitive insurance market that protects Louisiana families and rewards responsible behavior.
