Ever made a choice you knew was wrong, even if no one else found out? That's personal sin.

It's more than just "breaking a rule." Every personal sin is a choice that wounds our soul. It weakens our relationship with God, distorts our heart, and makes it harder to love as God calls us to (CCC 1849).

Even hidden sins damage our relationship with God and our capacity for love. It's a self-inflicted spiritual injury.

Recognizing this internal damage helps us understand why repentance and God's mercy are so vital for our spiritual health.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we give thanks to God for the blessings of our nation and the freedoms we enjoy.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that "the love and service of one's country follow from the duty of gratitude and belong to the order of charity" (CCC 2239). As Catholics, our love of country is not merely a civic responsibility but an expression of Christian charity toward the community that has nurtured us.

This love calls us to work for the common good, striving to build a society where every person can flourish and where truth, justice, freedom, and solidarity are upheld for all.
This Fourth of July, let us pray for our nation and recommit ourselves to living out this Catholic call to patriotism.
