The Scam

A false email sent to employers posing as an employee requesting changes to payroll direct deposit information — with the goal of redirecting the employee's paycheck to a fraudulent account.

How to Protect Your Business and Employees

❗️Verify all payroll change requests using a second method of contact (e.g., call the employee directly using their known number).
❗️Be suspicious of urgent or unusual requests, especially those made via email or text.
❗️Do not rely solely on email for sensitive employee account updates.
❗️Train payroll and HR staff to recognize phishing and impersonation attempts.

What To Do if You’re Targeted
❗️Do not process the change.
❗️Contact the employee directly to verify the request.
❗️Report the attempt to your IT department and, if appropriate, local law enforcement.
