This week, the Esri User Conference is taking place in San Diego, and while our team is joining remotely, we are soaking up every session, every announcement, and every tool that can bring better GIS education into Louisiana classrooms.

One highlight that has us especially excited: National Geographic MapMaker.
Developed through a partnership between Esri and the National Geographic Society, MapMaker is a web-based 2D and 3D application that allows anyone to visually experience and interact with geospatial information about Earth's interconnected social and physical systems. It was built specifically with K-12 students and teachers in mind.

What makes it stand out is the accessibility. MapMaker is free, runs on lightweight devices such as tablets and laptops, and does not require a login. It is touchscreen friendly for an easy experience for users at any age or level of familiarity with geography.
Students can create maps, add bookmarks, sketch features with pop-ups, and save their work as web maps to access in following lessons or use them to create StoryMaps.

This is exactly the kind of tool we want in every Louisiana classroom. Stay tuned as we bring what we are learning at the Esri UC back to our students and teachers.
