There have been positive cases of New World Screwworm infestations in the United States, specifically in Texas.

The New World screwworm infestation is a serious parasite where flies lay eggs in open wounds, and the larvae feed on living tissue. Even small cuts can quickly become significant infestations, making early prevention and wound care essential.

We strongly recommend keeping pets current on flea and tick prevention, including isoxazoline-based products such as fluralaner (Bravecto), sarolaner (Simparica), afoxolaner (NexGard), lotilaner (Credelio), and selamectin / sarolaner combination (Simparica TRIO).

While there are currently no direct preventatives for screwworm flies, owners can reduce risk by:

• Checking pets daily for wounds or skin irritation
• Cleaning and treating even minor injuries promptly
• Using fly control around the home and kennels
• Seeking veterinary care immediately for any suspicious or worsening wound

Early action is the best protection.
