We are incredibly proud of Dr. Abby Shoenfelt and honored to have her as part of our Baton Rouge team. Her strength, resilience and dedication to caring for others continue to make a meaningful impact. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Meet Dr. Abby Shoenfelt.

Ten years ago, Abby Shoenfelt’s life changed with a diagnosis she never saw coming.

As a first-year medical resident and new mom, she dismissed what she thought was mono, until one swollen lymph node revealed something far more serious: Hodgkin lymphoma.

Chemo, uncertainty, and the fear of not knowing what came next became part of everyday life. Yet even in the middle of the hardest season, she never lost sight of hope.

Today, she’s celebrating ten years as a cancer survivor.

She returned to medicine, completed her psychiatry residency through Our Lady of the Lake and LSU, and now dedicates her career to caring for patients living with severe mental illness. But if you ask her what she’s most proud of, the answer comes quickly:

“Momming, beating cancer, and finding my way back to medicine.”

Abby walks this year for every survivor, every patient still fighting, and every family who knows just how life-changing a cancer diagnosis can be.

“I am free. I am a survivor. It changed everything, but I learned how to love and thrive in the new normal.”

Her story is proof that while cancer may become part of your story, it doesn’t get to write the ending.

We are honored to recognize Dr. Abby Shoenfelt as one of the 2026 Capital Gala Faces of Impact.

Join us August 15 as we raise life-changing funds for the Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Institute and the Bella Bowman Foundation.

When mental health challenges begin to affect safety, stability, or daily life, knowing the right path forward matters.

Different levels of care are designed to meet different levels of need. For some, that may mean the structure and support of inpatient care. For others, an intensive outpatient program may provide the right support while allowing them to continue living at home.

Both are designed to help individuals receive care, build stability, and take the next step forward with support.

Oceans is here to provide steady, compassionate care at every stage of need.
