The Fight for Fair Maps Continues…

Louisiana deserves a congressional map that reflects its people.

Representative Terry Landry Jr. is standing with the citizens of District 67 and communities across the state who showed up, spoke out, and demanded fairness in the redistricting process.

While yesterday was difficult, the fight is not over.

Next week, this bill is expected to be heard in House and Governmental Affairs. We are encouraging citizens to continue showing up, testifying, and making their voices heard.

Democracy works best when the people are present.

Last night, the people spoke.

From 2:30 p.m. Tuesday until nearly 4:45 a.m. Wednesday morning, hundreds of citizens stood, waited, testified, and demanded fairness in our democracy. Working people. Students. Elders. Faith leaders. Parents. Community advocates. People who knew they might never get called to speak until the middle of the night, but stayed anyway because they understood what was at stake.

And despite overwhelming public support for a congressional map that fairly reflects the people of Louisiana, the Senate & Governmental Affairs Committee voted along straight party lines for a map with 5 Republican districts and only 1 Democratic district.

Let’s be clear: this was never just about lines on a map. This is about whether the voices of Black voters and communities across Louisiana will be fairly represented or intentionally diluted. It is about whether democracy belongs to all of us, or only to those already in power.

I am deeply disappointed in the outcome of tonight’s vote. But I am equally inspired by the people. Because while some may have had the votes in committee, the people had the courage. They showed what democracy is supposed to look like: ordinary citizens sacrificing sleep, time, and comfort to fight for something bigger than themselves.

History has never favored those who stayed silent in the face of injustice. And every major step toward equality in this country was met first with resistance.

So no, we did not win this battle tonight. But this fight is far from over.

To every person who testified, waited, marched, prayed, organized, and refused to leave: thank you. Louisiana saw you. And future generations will remember that when democracy was tested, you showed up and stood firm until the very end.

We keep fighting.
