The Anniversary Effect of PTSD

The ‘Anniversary Effect’ or Anniversary Reaction is commonly defined as a series of unhealthy thoughts, irritable behaviors and disturbing feelings that can occur on the anniversary date of a significant tragic event. Research shows that many victims who are exposed to catastrophic events like hurricanes and floods have experienced the mental health effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Some common symptoms of PTSD are intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood, and changes in your physical and emotional reactions. Intrusive or disturbing memories can occur in the form of flashbacks, dreams and nightmares. These memories lack the awareness that they are something from the past, and are instead experienced as some kind of threat in the “NOW” present. Avoidance coping, another aspect of PTSD, involves a person changing their behaviors to avoid dealing with a stressor in order to protect themselves from a reality that is unacceptable to them. Avoidance coping, when left untreated can lead up to substance abuse and social withdrawals. Experiencing negative effects on thinking and mood is another sign and symptom of PTSD that can lead to anxiety, severe depression and suicidal thoughts. To help combat some of these negative symptoms and reduce anxiety levels you can explore taking part in self-care rituals like yoga, morning meditations, reading and practicing gratitude. It is also important to be aware of changes in your physical and emotional reactions while experiencing different levels of severe trauma. These symptoms can manifest to, being easily startled or frightened, always being on guard for danger, self-destructive behaviors, difficulty sleeping and trouble concentrating.

One of the most effective ways to cope and reduce the anniversary effect of PTSD symptoms is by having early access to mental health counseling that includes, cognitive behavior therapy and medication management.

Behavioral Health Impact of Hurricanes

In recent years there has been an increasingly large number of dangerous hurricanes and floods due to climate change. These natural disasters have caused an unprecedented adverse effect
on the mental and physical health of storm survivors. In most cases, it is normal for hurricanes and other extreme natural disasters to cause people to experience both traumatic and emotional distress.
However, it is important to understand that there are a number of ways to help restore your emotional health and well-being after a traumatic event.

To begin your road to recovery you first must acknowledge and recognize that despite being overwhelmed by challenging issues and events you CAN recover. Allow yourself to mourn any
losses you may have experienced. Recognizing this important step will help you to better manage your emotional disturbances and recovery methods.

Take a break from being exposed and bombarded by news and social media feeds that may
increase your level of anxiety and stress. Watching constant replays of news footage during a disaster can increase your levels of stress and arrest your mental health. Try to find “pleasurable”
hobbies or activities such as, yoga, meditation and exercising that can promote your emotional healing and self-care.

Avoid isolating yourself if at all possible. Ask for help from your family, friends or neighbors who care about your well-being and can empathize with your traumatic experience. You can also
engage in journaling or keeping a diary. Using these forms of self-expression will encourage your emotional acceptance and your healing process.

Most of all, it is very important to seek help when needed. If you were impacted by a hurricane and subsequent flooding or having trouble coping with the anniversary of past hurricanes or just trying to move on again with life, please do not hesitate to contact a local mental health resource center.
