Bring Back Home Economics Because Our Kids Lack Basic Life Skills 01/23/2023

Back to basics. Not just gardening but really growing your own food. Especially now when food is out of control more important than ever to grow your own.

Bring Back Home Economics Because Our Kids Lack Basic Life Skills Cooking, cleaning and gardening are just as important as reading, writing and arithmetic Recently, I saw an article about bringing home economics back to schools. For the past three days I have been going over in my head my son Adam’s essay for his college admissions. Adam wrote about his experience this Spring & Summer working on our Cabo Farmstead. This year because of Covid and being safely locked down in our beautiful Beacon home, we as a family decided to farm our family home which sits on two acres in Beacon(Town of Fishkill). During this Covid time we wanted to do something interesting, and good for our souls. We thought to get closer to nature by growing our own food and flowers to sell on our Cabo Farmstead. Adam’s essay was amazing how he connected the dots between our farmstead, and how it brought the family closer together. We all learned so much about not only plants as a food source and flowers, but also we learned about ourselves and what is important to our family. Sales of homegrown flowers would help the farm to cover some expenses and supplement the farm. Adam said it was his most amazing year and that he learned so much. I think it is a memory which we created together that will last their lifetime. I really feel good this is something which has been planted in their DNA and they will have long after I’m gone. You can learn things in school and books, but what we all learned on the farmstead about human nature, and working with plants is something you can only get by jumping into the garden just as the Cabo siblings Noga & Adam did by jumping in with both hands and feet. I am so proud that even though I didn’t think they were watching my horticulture career they were taking it all in all the time. God bless all my children , wife & family . I am truly blessed. Thank you God for another chance at a great life :-)
