SHOULD I INSTALL MY OWN FORK KIT?
-
Great Q. Dropping in our Pro-Action Fork Kit is not the hardest thing in the world—but there are a few factors to consider.
-
1) Are you mechanically inclined? Not only do you HAVE some basic hand tools, do you know how to use them? Most H-D riders can turn a wrench, so most of you are good on this aspect.
-
2) Do I even WANT to do this? Do you have the time, space, or even interest to do this? Or, do you have a gearhead buddy who LOVES to tinker, and would enjoy this more than you.
-
3) Do you have a bike lift, access to one, or have some apparatus to raise the front end enough to slide out the fork tubes? This is a pretty big part of the process. Even if you have the lift, we recommend inviting a friend over to help stabilize the bike while it is in the air. (Beverage and pizza payments are a good incentive).
-
4) Once the tubes are off, the rest is fairly easy. Just take your time and follow the steps in the video below.
-
5) DON’T DO IT! If you are having doubts or don’t have the time, WE can do it for you!
There’s two options:
A) If you DO have a way to get the tubes off, and don’t want to mess with the internals, you can ship your forks to us. Our master techs can’t swap in our Fork Kit and ship them back to you. Fees apply.
B) This may be the best route if you live in the Greater Pittsburgh, PA area… have US do it! Bring your whole bike to HQ and we’ll remove the forks, install our fork kit, and put it all back together for you. Fees apply. Reservation is required. Process takes 2.5 hours-ish. You can check out beautiful Beaver Falls, PA while you wait.

BEHIND THE STEEL/ALUMINUM CURTAIN
-
What you are watching is a damper rod being made. The more interesting part is: that’s Eric’s CNC machine. Who’s Eric? Eric is our master technician who has been building and re-building shocks and forks with us for more than 18 years. You’ve also seen him at the dirt bike races, building and rebuilding suspensions in the back of the box truck.
-
Eric is also a master machinist! He has own shop, just down the road from P-A HQ. He creates many of the components used in our street and dirt suspensions including: rear pistons and valve bodies for off-road; plus damper rods, bushings, jets and base plates for inside our H-D shocks—and some of the custom tools we use for building suspensions.
-
The man is a machine himself! When he’s not here, he’s at his shop working on metal. He's nonstop.
-
Eric is a key piece of the P-A team, and we plan on keeping him for another 18+ years. Oddly enough, we don’t have a current pic of Eric. He’s camera-shy, plus we don’t need Hollywood lighting up our phones.
-
These two vids are of his same CNC machine. It weighs around 19,000 lbs and is as big as a truck. The first clip is a H-D damper rod being made and second clip shows the machine changing tool heads. Pretty cool, right!
