Planting and protecting more than one-million trees in Whatcom County - for our community's health & future.

Native forest communities thrive on diversity. Human communities do too.

At WMTP, we feel lucky and grateful to be part of a diverse community, and we want to sing it out from every mountain top during Pride Month. When a forest is forced into a monoculture, it becomes vulnerable to disease. When a forest is allowed to express its diversity, it flourishes, adapts, and endures. May we all feel free to be who we are and to love who we love.

We joyfully celebrate the vitality of difference. We see you, we welcome you, and we believe in you. We love you! And we couldn’t be prouder.

Like it or not, Congress holds the power to decide how our federal forests are managed. On Wednesday, June 3rd at 5pm, join LFDC’s Andy Shoemaker and the John Muir Project’s D.C.-based Policy and Advocacy Director Jenn Mamola for an hour-long workshop exploring how the public can effectively get their message across to their representatives in Congress. This session offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at how Washington D.C. works, along with practical strategies for making your voice heard in defense of the people, plants and animals that rely on responsible stewardship of healthy, intact federal forests.

It's a helpful summary of why past and current forestry practices aren't working to protect communities in the wildland urban interface, and what easily implemented and affordable tactics are proven to be effective in protecting homes from igniting from wildfires.

The natural areas protected by the Roadless Rule need the voices of everyone who cares about them to speak up now, more than ever. The Roadless Rule rescission process is expected to return this month for another (likely short) public comment period. This rule, which protects 58 million acres of national forests from new road construction, could open more than 400,000 acres in the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest (MBSNF) to roads and logging. Wildfires are four times more likely to ignite within 50 meters of a road than in similar forested areas that have no road access.

We’ll send out a special alert when the comment window opens. You can help by preparing your written comments, and inviting others to subscribe to this newsletter and follow us on social media so they’ll get the alerts too.
