Ten years ago this week arrived in a strange new town without a job or place to live knowing just a few key people from the scene. Here's a handful of ambitious dreams that achieved fruition in the surreal time since:
Bringing a weekly swing dance back to the historic Hotel Leo after starting out as dapper concierge shown the company ballroom first day of training with management asking Any ideas what we could do with this space? as I replied in the affirmative and made it happen with B'ham Hop
Becoming an award-winning Music Coordinator through supporting countless independent players five summers running with the First Friday Busking Program made possible by Team LPJ at Downtown Bellingham Partnership entrusting me with thousands of grant monies paying homage to the artists
Forming Hot House Jazz Band who united feet from the shadows to the spotlight and closing out our ten-piece tenure with vintage adventure offering prohibition-era sounds to folks who need it most those grateful attendees serving short to life sentences at Washington State Penitentiary
Spending six months curating a voice for radio with my own show on KMRE live every Saturday celebrating the bands befriended at home and abroad while acknowledging Portland with a special theme song
Having the honor of producing Bad Posture Club's prodigal return to town with a sold out intimate listening event held in the gorgeous giving ballroom of Chuckanut Bay Distillery
Using connections from collaboration with CBD's empowering powers-that-be to help resurrect a former working speakeasy called The Pastime where mystery and history converge in sensory custom cocktails atmospheric class and live early jazz from hidden door behind Cornwall Ave
Convincing C.W. Stoneking and Gunhild Carling to make unplanned stops in Bellingham town for sharing their rare nostalgic sound on our small local stages deserving of such education when we're more often seen as a scenic drive-thru in lieu of destination
Securing permission from the city to commission top notch muralist Ruckas of Bird Alley lore for hand painting a twenty-five foot trumpet in the parking lot at Girard and D marking sixty-eight days of sunset serenades during early days of pandemic spending time with each other through tune from a distance
Migrating from sales associate to Assistant Manager at Bellingham Wind Works aka the magical musical machine shop on Meridian Street where bosses make me feel seen surrounded by skilled nerds of the highest order teaching me new things each shift despite three decades spent in the industry
Lastly and mostly sitting in with Michael-Paul Gurulé and Nuages at our dear Uisce where I'd serendipitously meet the love of my life after crossing four continents and all fifty states looking for her leading to the greatest story ever told with a parentship we both deserve to hold
Thank you to all of you who've welcomed me in with camaraderie through trumpet pins and cheers to the late great Sir Lucas Hicks who built all of this by encouraging me to move to Bellingham in the first place.
