Planning an event? Use the resources in Accessibility Library to make it more inclusive 12/27/2023

What is an "Accessibility Library"?

The Akron-Summit County Public Library has recently launched a brand-new resource for its residents, an Accessibility Library!

This library is a resource center dedicated to making events more accessible and inclusive for those with disabilities. They provide services ranging from sensory travel kits to audio description devices, as well as planning guides and assistance for creating accessible events, all at no cost.

This project was curated by the artist and founder of Art Speaks Audacity to Advocate, Alicia Hopkins:

“As a disabled artist, I found that arts in Akron weren't accessible and I wanted to change that. I knew that with the help of an accessibility library events could be inclusive and accessible in a way that opens doors for opportunities for people with disabilities and older adults to engage in the arts in all avenues."

A public library providing accessible and inclusive resources is a great step in making accessibility a community priority. We hope that many other cities across the country see this example and make an Accessibility Library of their own.
