An ode to finishing… to all the dopamine seekers, sufferers of cast-on-itis… I’m here to offer the gentle reminder that there is so much satisfaction in finishing things too, not just starting them. For a recent two week journey, I had a fresh WIP cast on and ready to tuck into, perfect for long plane rides and social knitting. I felt sure I’d finish the second sleeve on the ride home from the airport, because THIS was the perfect travel project! I had that fresh WIP confidence!
But then, I shocked myself by leaving it behind and digging out 4 languishing WIPs, all old enough to be potty trained if they were children... I’m not exaggerating when I say they took up half of my luggage space. Before I could change my mind, I was away from home, away from my stash, my needle case, and I was stuck finishing things, whether I liked it or not. First off were the sleeves of a pretty exciting sweater. I was free styling some serious pattern mods, so I wasn’t super confident, but the sweater turned out! Next was a Fair Isle sweater vest that was already split for front and back! I was using three colors of yarn at some points, doing colorwork from the wrong side… talk about existential dread… but I finished that too, and it’s incredible! Next off were these gorgeous and you know what? They were incredibly satisfying, and I learned that you can’t suffer from second sock syndrome if you cast the next sock the day you finish the first! I grabbed this quick pic, as they are a gift for my big brother.

All of this to say: there is much dopamine to mine from finishing your knits, not just starting!
