Why buy a vacuum when your house has one built in?
Found during this home inspection, the home featured a central vaccum which is a system that has a container and motor located in a basement or ultility area and has tubing running through the home’s walls to inlets in various rooms to hook a vaccum hose to.
These units tend to be quieter, powerful and were common in homes built in the 1980’s through the 1990’s and while they are more a niche element now, they do still serve a purpose.

As home inspectors we’re looking out for the safety of our clients. With patios and walkways, loose bricks and pavers can be a safety hazard when the grouting is worn down or missing, causing them to move and shift. In the case here, the grouting was missing so it was reccomended that a qualified paver or contractor review it.

Natural gas is a very popular fuel to heat homes, use for cooking and hot water, etc. In homes that have natural gas lines, it’s really important to make sure that these lines are labeled with the yellow tape you see here.
Having this yellow tape with the words “natural gas” on it helps to quickly identify that this water heater uses that as a fuel source.
It’s also important to note where your shut off valves are. For this line, it’s on the pipe itself. Knowing where these valves are, like in the event of an emergency, makes for a more educated homeowner.

We all love when a house has nice looking landscaping. And we probably all like when there’s some shade nearby to enjoy when being outside in the warmer months. But your roof? Not so much.
Tree branches hanging over the house, like in this picture form a previous inspection, can be a nuance for the health of the roof. It can lead to accumulation of tree material that invites possible moisture and critters. It can also cause damage in a storm event or get in the way of things like electrical lines.
Preventive maintenance is always key! Make sure to have those branches maintained and cut back to ensure a healthy and happy roof!

When possible, a good home inspector should test the appliances in the home to be sure they are in working order. This gas stove for example had a properly working oven as well as all 4 burners on the stovetop running in excellent shape.
Wether you’re buying or selling a home, you can benefit from a home inspection. Call or text (516)589-2617 or visit bhinspect.com to book!

Having shrubs, a garden always improves the appearance of the home. While nice to have, if they aren’t manicured or too close to the home, they can cause some unnecessary issues.
With this home, the grasses and shrubs weren’t maintained well and caused it to grow too near and up against the house. This can invite unwanted moisture, pests who can use these to get onto the structure or sneak around unnoticed and just create a messy appearance. Its always a good rule of thumb to keep gardens and shrubs near the home at least 6 inches away from the house and regular maintenance to avoid situations like this.

This was a cool find! On much older houses like this one, you used to have fuse boxes that used fuses to distribute electric to the home.
Fuses were susceptible to blowing out often and didn’t provide fault arc protection. When a fuse blew, you’d have to replace the fuse by hand. Over time, these fuse boxes become phased out as standard electrical panels and breakers provided more safety and more amperage needs would develop to power higher end devices and appliances.
