On June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed Confederate slaves, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas announcing that more than 250,000 enslaved people in that state were free. That date came to be known as “Juneteenth” by the newly freed people in Texas and is celebrated in the African American community as a day of remembrance and hope. At Holiday, we are real people from different backgrounds, with different experiences, abilities, and ideas. We recognize each individual’s background and celebrate historical events that have impacted and shaped those around us.
