Horses exposed to smoke and ash may experience lasting health repercussions. Even within barns, the air quality they breathe mirrors that of the external environment, unless the barn is enclosed and equipped with HVAC systems or a closed air circulation setup.

Throughout this exposure horses inhale ash and small particles, known as particulates, which can become lodged in both their upper airway and lungs. Increased respiration during physical activity or while engaging in turnout activities can increase accumulation of these foreign particles in the lungs. The extent to which particles accumulate deep into the lungs correlates with the duration of recovery.

Monitor the air quality index (AQI) to determine if the air is clearing and can start the countdown to riding once again. The AQI needs to be consistently below 100 throughout a 24-hour period to be counted as a “clean air day.” The number of clean air days are used to establish the horse’s recovery schedule.

When the air quality is consistently below 100, it is ideal to allow horses a period of rest in a turnout or pasture for at least seven days, and is better especially if the AQI was over 400 at any time. It is recommended to avoid strenuous activities during this time to give the lungs time to clear accumulated particulates. Adequate hydration is an important factor in clearing particulates.

✔️ Pre-existing respiratory conditions.
✔️ The fitness of the horse prior to the period of poor air quality.
