Partnerships in Mitigation
Project Wildfire was created by county ordinance and is governed by a steering committee of up to 27 people from public agencies and the private sector. The Program Director is an independent contractor working in conjunction with the Deschutes County Forester, who manages the contract.
An annual program of work approved by the committee directs the scope of activities each year. Project Wildfire engages in Community Wildfire Protection Plans, evacuation route signage, Fire Adapted Communities Learning Network, FireFree, Firewise USA and other programs as a partner or coordinator.
Our mission is to prevent deaths, injuries, property loss, and environmental damage resulting from wildfires in Deschutes County.
Project Wildfire achieves its mission by:
- Developing long-term wildfire prevention and education strategies designed to reach an ever-changing community.
- Creating disaster resistant communities through collaboration with community members and a network of specialized partners.
- Mitigating the severity and amount of damage caused by wildfire in wildland urban interface (WUI) areas through hazardous fuels reduction programs.
- Reducing the impact of fuels reduction on the environment by recycling the woody biomass resulting from hazardous fuels reduction projects.
Steering Committee meetings are the 3rd Tues. of each month from 8-9:30am at 1300 NW Wall St., Bend, OR 97701.
