The Deschutes County Road Department will close Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road for the winter season on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at about 8 a.m.

These high-elevation forest highways are closed each year in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to support winter recreation.

Deschutes County maintains the roads through an easement agreement with the Forest Service. Snow can pile up five to 10 feet deep at the summit, making year-round snow and ice removal too costly to maintain.

The Road Department plans to reopen both Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road before Memorial Day each year.
