The leaves featured here are symbols of love. During the spring of 2022, Roy G Eversole Elementary students were invited to celebrate loved ones through writing, drawing, and sharing stories with their classmates. For some, these leaves may represent people who passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic. For others, they may represent beloved individuals who have helped them through hard times.
This activity was facilitated by Nicole Garneau, a Partners for Rural Impact Teaching Artist, as part of The Healing Tree Project. This community project engaged every school in the Hazard Independent and Perry County school districts to support young people reflecting on pandemic experiences with a healing-centered lens. Many participants also worked with visiting artists to sculpt metal leaves which are now attached to the Healing Tree sculpture in the ArtStation courtyard in downtown Hazard, KY.
