Sofar Ocean is partnering with Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme - SPREP to deploy 20 Spotter Smart Moorings across Kiribati and Samoa, expanding real-time ocean data coverage across the Pacific.
For Pacific Island nations facing coastal flooding, extreme wave events, and shifting ocean conditions, better data isn't just useful. It's necessary.
These deployments will support early warnings of dangerous swell and marine heatwaves, safer maritime and fisheries operations, and stronger disaster risk reduction for coastal communities.
This deployment is funded through the EU-funded ClimSA Pacific programme, implemented by SPREP in partnership with Kiribati Meteorological Services and Samoa Meteorological Services.

Since last Thursday, Typhoon Bavi has intensified from tropical storm to Category 5 "super typhoon" as it tracks through the West Pacific, amid an intensifying El Niño season. Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan were placed under typhoon warnings over the weekend as sustained winds climbed to 282 km/h.
320 km ahead of Bavi's leading edge, our Spotter SPOT-32034C is making direct, real-time observations of the extreme conditions the storm is generating with significant wave heights already over 6 meters.
Ground truth data like this, captured by Sofar Ocean's Spotter network, sharpens our maritime weather forecast, giving maritime operators and coastal planners a clearer picture as high sea states build.

Mahalo and Kalahngan to the Conservation Society of Pohnpei for featuring Backyard Buoys Spotter buoys in their presentation during their MiCOAST monthly meeting!
The Micronesian Community-based Fisheries Management as a Nature-Based Solution for Coastal Resilience project (MiCOAST) is a regional climate-adaptation and marine conservation initiative. Operating across the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Palau, the Marshall Islands, and Nauru, it empowers local communities to protect coastal ecosystems and ensure food security.
The project is supported by the Kiwa Initiative—funded by the EU, France, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—and is led regionally by OneReef Worldwide Stewardship alongside local partners, including the Conservation Society of Pohnpei.
