Join us in welcoming Claudia Cohn and Galen Speliotopoulos, our summer interns through the City of Berkeley YouthWorks Program, which helps young people build professional skills while exploring future educational and career paths.

Claudia recently graduated from high school and will begin studying Architecture at Princeton University this fall. Inspired by cities like Barcelona, especially its walkability and architecture, Claudia enjoys creating things by hand and is most proud of projects they’ve built themselves, from architecture models to furniture and lighting pieces. When not at work, you’ll likely find Claudia enjoying a quiet morning with coffee, a book, and a few hours of uninterrupted time before the day begins.

Galen is currently attending Berkeley City College and studying General Studies while exploring future opportunities. If given the chance to instantly master a new skill, Galen would choose drawing, a creative pursuit that’s long been on the wish list. Galen enjoys revisiting favorite movie moments through online clips, has a karaoke playlist full of pop favorites, and thinks being a bird for a day would be the perfect way to experience the freedom of flight.

This summer, Claudia and Galen are building skills in research, communication, collaboration, and design while gaining hands-on experience alongside our planning, urban design, and architecture teams. We’re excited to have them with us and look forward to seeing where their journeys take them.

Have you met the individuals leading the site planning and architecture team at Opticos Design? They design walkable, context-sensitive places and help take projects from early visioning and sketching through implementation. Their work is rooted in human-scale design, distinctive placemaking, and creating buildings and neighborhoods that feel authentic to their setting.

Their project experience includes work on:

- Culdesac in Tempe, AZ — a mobility rich, climate-responsive neighborhood and national innovation in walkability
- Prairie Queen in Papillion, NE — described as the nation’s first all–Missing Middle neighborhood
- The Shoals in Athens, GA, West Village in Florence, AL, and a new community in Georgetown, TX
- Bayview Heights in Erie, PA – a courtyard infill development in the West Bayfront neighborhood
- West Village in Florence, AL – stitching back the urban fabric with an extended main street, connected third spaces, and a variety of housing types
- River House Cottages in Healdsburg, CA,
- Civic Center Apartments, a Homekey funded permanent supportive housing adaptive rehab of a Motel 6 in Richmond, CA

Across these efforts, the team brings expertise in architecture, site planning, urban design, sustainability, and Missing Middle housing, with experience ranging from infill housing and transit-oriented development to larger neighborhood design.

Their focus is consistent: creating beautiful, connected places that welcome people of all ages, incomes, and stages of life.
