Its impossible not to go CRAZY at the Baker Heirloom Seed Bank. Almost 55 years ago, we brought purple okra seeds donated by the US Peace Corp, to Maasin Elementary School in Zamboanga. It was a novelty, it tasted good, it was exciting. I never knew if anyone banked any seeds for future planting. Some years after I left, I began to bring seeds as presents but never followed up on seed banks. But for the last 30 years, I’ve continued to give seeds for food and for flowers that bring smiles. Today, under the able direction and management of Tess Martin, Gardening for Food in the Philippines is finally tracking gardeners, locations, training for composting to grow organic.

Cancer is increasing in the Philippines, especially among those living by farms that spray pesticides. In our small way, our gardeners are inspiring others to grow food for the table. It’s a good skill to learn because the yearly expected disasters that follow the rainy and dry seasons come like the ever expectant moon. Growing in movable re-purposed containers keeps the garden under control, saves water, and organic fertilizer. During destructive typhoons and extreme heat, pitted vegetables can be easily relocated. You can on porches, decks, alleys. You do not need more than 1-2 square meters of land or space.

For Grow Pads for seeds, save all your tiny yogurt containers; cups; trim down soda bottles; egg cartons; coffee cups.

For Growing save: Rice sacks; clothe bags; old pots; hollow blocks; any container that can hold soil.

The Baker Seed Bank has a row of almost 20 different corn varieties and as many different kinds of eggplants, tomatoes, squash. Buying seeds is easy. Knowing what to buy depends on the destination. But germinating, planting, nurturing, watering, fertilizing, takes a minimum level of knowledge. Protection fro birds and other predators is another. Making seeds for a bank to guarantee continuum is another skill to learn just once. It takes patience, dedication, and can involve family members. The best part comes the joy of eating what you grew and knowing you have no cancer causing chemicals in your food!

No Airport and you are going to an island to visit the Seaweed farmers; the coconut processing plant; the bunkhouses, dragging goods. Not to worry. You jump from the pier into an outrigger boat. It’s the only way to enjoy the islands - by blowing in the wind.
