In 2006, Zaytuna Institute moved from its Jackson Street schoolhouse in Hayward to a new office on Allston Way in downtown Berkeley, planting itself in the heart of one of America’s great centers of learning.

A new chapter was beginning.

As its physical home changed, Zaytuna’s programming continued to mature. That year, the Institute hosted Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and author Chris Hedges for a talk entitled “Does God Love War?”—part of Zaytuna’s growing effort to engage the most urgent moral, spiritual, and intellectual questions of the time.

Year by year, the foundations were being laid—not only for individual students and scholars, but for an institution that would soon take a historic leap.

The early seeds of Zaytuna were planted by people who believed sacred knowledge could take root in America. Today, you can help that work continue.
