If considering a Home Owners Association, be sure to review the HOA documents thoroughly. Some HOA’s restrict the number of pets, breeds and sizes that are allowed in the community.

Be sure to consider all the features of the house. For example, do you want a home with carpet? Or, are wood and tile floors a must have because of the ease of cleaning up after muddy paws, etc.

The layout of the house is very important. Owners with senior dogs should consider single-story homes in case the pet(s) have trouble climbing stairs. Owners with younger dogs need to consider outdoor space, especially if owning an active breed. You also want to be sure there is ample space for your pet(s) to go outdoors to go do “good boy” or “good girl”. Having a fenced in yard might be a “must have” on your list. What if the home has a pool in the backyard? Consider the safety of your pet(s) by making sure the pool area is secured with a fence or cover to avoid any tragedies.

How busy are the streets in the neighborhood? Whether you own a breed that is a couch potato or an escape artist, a home located on a very high traffic street, if the door swings open, it creates an opportunity for your pet to get outside.

If the home you are considering has pets, or pets in the past, be sure to inspect for damage. You can check under rugs for stains from “accidents” and back of doors for scratches.

Be sure to research the availability and proximity of pet services, i.e. veterinarians, pet food stores, doggy day care, groomers, etc.

While I may be partial to dogs, all the above considerations can easily be applied to all types of pets.

As a firm supporter of “second-hand dogs give first class love”, there is nothing more rewarding then opening your heart and home to a dog (pet) who, by no fault of their own, ended up in an unfortunate circumstance.
