From Hungary to America, The Memoir of a Holocaust Survivor

I wanted to share the LinkedIn post from my publisher, Liesbeth Heenk of Amsterdam Publishers who works tirelessly in support of her authors. I am presenting today at Lockwood High School. I appreciate any help I can get to arrange visits to schools and other venues so that I can share my father's story.
"One of the most meaningful aspects of publishing Holocaust memoirs is seeing what happens after a book is released.
Andrew Laszlo, son of the author of Footnote to History, has taken his father’s story far beyond the page. Over the past years, he has given more than 80 talks across the United States, speaking to civic groups, museums, companies, congregations — and, most importantly, high school students.
On average, Andrew delivers three to five presentations each month, often addressing hundreds of students at a time, sometimes more than a thousand! His presentations, supported by carefully prepared visuals and personal narration, do more than recount history. They open a conversation.
Imagine the impact of this work: telling a Holocaust story to hundreds of young minds each time. Given how limited Holocaust knowledge is among many students today, his work is all the more important — teaching history through his father’s story, in a way that is personal, tangible, and impossible to ignore.
What stands out is Andrew's focus. While the horrors of the Holocaust are never far away, he speaks just as much about resilience, compassion, and the possibility of building a meaningful life after unimaginable loss.
The responses he receives say more than any introduction could:
A school principal described his talk as “one of the best student assemblies in 24 years in education.” A student wrote that the presentation “touched something deep” and changed how they think about hope and resilience.Teachers speak of an impact that will stay with their students for years.
This is exactly why these books matter, and why I so firmly believe in storytelling. True stories.
Not only because they preserve history, but because — in the hands of committed authors like Andrew — they continue to reach new generations, encouraging them to think, to reflect, and to take responsibility for the world they inherit.

On Monday, I presented my PowerPoint of my father's (Andrew Laszlo) Holocaust survival at Bozeman High School. It was a special talk for me. Bozeman is close to Butte where my maternal great-grandfather came to Montana after serving a seven year indentured servitude in Ohio circa 1885. It is also close to Ennis where my great-grandfather and grandfather bought the ranch in 1936 which is still in our family today. The students were bright and engaged. It was a wonderful audience. Special thanks to English teacher, Katie Paynich for all her time in putting the event together. The students were especially interested in my father's movie career, how he was able to put his past behind to become a famous cinematographer. One of them asked what movie that he filmed was his favorite. I think it was The Warriors, the film directed by Walter Hill about the night all of the gangs of New York came together to take over the city. Pictured below: Several students stayed after to ask questions and share their thoughts (my favorite part of a presentation). Teachers Katie and Kevin who organized the event. The poster from the Warriors, my father's favorite movie.

I have very little visual evidence of my father's life other that a few family pictures. A friend of mine just found 5 video interviews that he did for television about his career in the movie business. For those of you who have heard me talk or come to one of my presentations, you might be interested as to how he looked and spoke. They were recorded before he shared the secret of his Holocaust survival. He came to the US penniless at 21 and became a famous Cinematographer. I just posted all of them on my YouTube Channel, Footnote to History.

The first 2 are one minute each and talk about his movie, The Warriors. They are posted under the videos section. The last three are 20 minutes long each and posted as a playlist. For someone who grew up in Hungary and came to the U.S. at 21, he spoke very good English, his 5th language after Hungarian, Russian, German and Japanese.
