Have you noticed our SaffPower hand sanitizing lotion on the shelves of the Co-op? This isn’t just any normal sanitizing company! SaffPower is a family company, whose products are produced and bottled right here in Bismarck, using sustainable, and often local, agriculture products. Founders Randy and Diana Lang want to grow SaffPower into a company that can benefit the community of Bismarck, as well as North Dakota’s state and agricultural economy.

The ethanol used in SaffPower hand sanitizer is manufactured in Richardton, ND, and the cold-pressed safflower oil comes from right here in Bismarck! The main ingredients are very much green, natural, and renewable, and total to just 7 ingredients, compared to 14 or more in some leading brands. Plus, all of the ingredients are safe, either food or cosmetic grade.

SaffPower gets its name from its use of safflower oil in its formula, which is well known for its moisturizing and healing properties for skin. Infusing the sanitizer with a healthy dose of safflower oil leaves your hands feeling silky and moisturized after every use. This is not a common outcome of sanitizer, which usually dries and cracks the skin, and can be smelly, runny, or sticky. In fact, in a survey conducted for Innovate North Dakota, respondents overwhelmingly replied they liked nothing about the current sanitizer products they use. “SaffPower is completely different in that you will actually enjoy our product,” says Randy.

Randy says giving people a product that they are happy with is very rewarding and loves to see people’s first reactions. “It’s just not what you expect when trying a hand sanitizer, and that surprise shows. When we handed out samples at the Pride of Dakota Holiday Showcase in Bismarck, it was fun to watch people walk away after receiving a sample, seeing them rub their hands and nod in approval, and then come back to our table to buy some.”

Randy says that innovation is a very exciting part of owning SaffPower, as they are constantly working on new product offerings that use safflower oil and other raw materials from right here in North Dakota. Currently, the team at SaffPower is in the early stages of producing a natural insect repellent. No DEET!

Randy’s third and final favorite part of operating SaffPower is what a pleasure it is to be in the work space. “Our production facility is the best smelling building in town. Depending on the scent we are producing, the building always has a soft scent of vanilla, spearmint, black raspberry, or coconut.”
