A cell phone is not a luxury — it’s a lifeline.

For young people experiencing homelessness, having a cell phone can mean the difference between staying disconnected or being able to access school, jobs, health care, and a future. In today’s world, everything from submitting homework to applying for jobs to accessing vital resources happens online.

Schools expect students to submit assignments digitally.
Most job applications are now 100% online.
Mental health support, housing waitlists, and caseworker contacts? All through apps, email, and portals.

Technology continues to evolve — cloud storage, digital IDs, and secure access to school or government platforms often require smartphones with updated software. Basic phones just can’t handle it. Being without a smartphone means being locked out of essential opportunities.

In Minnesota, the average cost of a smartphone is about $150–$300 upfront, with a monthly phone plan ranging from $35–$75+. That’s often out of reach for youth facing housing insecurity — but it shouldn’t be.

Let’s shift the perspective: A cell phone for a young person without stable housing isn’t a luxury — it’s a basic need in a digital society.
