Is there a downside to airplanes being too reliable? Japan airlines discovered that with increased reliability, there is less opportunity for mechanics to receive training since the airplanes are in the air. Japan Airlines recently trialed a Virtual Reality training program for their pilots. The VR environment simulates an engine run-up scenario. JAL says this allows their mechanics to become familiar with the procedure while removing the need to have a plane physically in a hangar. Brilliant!

JAL Completes VR Maintenance Training Trial The airline is working to develop a training solution to improve mechanic proficiency without needing physical access to aircraft.
