Is there a downside to airplanes being too reliable? Japan airlines discovered that with increased reliability, there is less opportunity for mechanics to receive training since the airplanes are in the air. Japan Airlines recently trialed a Virtual Reality training program for their pilots. The VR environment simulates an engine run-up scenario. JAL says this allows their mechanics to become familiar with the procedure while removing the need to have a plane physically in a hangar. Brilliant!
