Monroe Fire Protection District

June 11th 2026 - At approximately 1:15 p.m. yesterday, units from the Monroe Fire Protection District and Ellettsville Fire Department were dispatched to the 7400 block of West Airport Road in response to a reported structure fire.

Engine 29 arrived on scene within minutes and reported smoke coming from the residence. Upon entering the home, firefighters located a fire just inside the doorway of the main living area. Crews acted quickly and were able to extinguish the fire within minutes, preventing further damage to the structure.

The homeowner, who discovered the fire upon returning home, informed firefighters that two dogs and two cats were inside the residence at the time of the incident. Firefighters conducted a search of the home and successfully located all four animals. All were found barely breathing and were immediately removed from the structure.

Fire crews administered oxygen using pet oxygen masks, and after several minutes, the animals began to show signs of improvement. The homeowner transported the pets to a local veterinarian for further evaluation. Reports from homeowner before crews left were that all pets were going to make it. (Update 6/11 - Family members have reported one cat did pass away).

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

City of Bloomington, IN - Fire Department Engine 2 was initially requested to assist but was later disregarded.

Units responding to the incident included Engines 29, 39, 81, and 22; Rescue 22; Ambulance 29; Battalion 22; and Chiefs 2-8 and 2-10.
