The Pipsqueakery

I would like to introduce you all to the River Rats.
You may remember that we took in some rats that were found in a sealed cardboard box dumped into a river. These are some of those rats and I have been tasked with socializing them and getting them to trust people again. The group consists of 6 males of varying ages and sizes. So far, they are not friendly, but not mean either. They are just distrusting and who could blame them after what they have been through?
Here is what I have been doing so far: snacks! So many snacks. First, I offered the snacks directly by hand. Eventually, I began picking up the rats, petting them, telling them that they are cute and precious, and then gave them a treat when I put them back if they were cooperative. As you can see, this strategy is working quite well! I am going to need more rat snacks (treats from the baby food aisle) if I want to keep this up.

P.S. The white and black guy hanging over the edge is the most friendly. He is one of the smaller rats and tolerates being held, pet, and gushed over quite well. I have even been able to tickle his back and get him to hop around excitedly a few times.

It’s sticky and hot and muggy and gross. Even the squirrels are melting!
