Quality, life-saving health care close to home. It's just the beginning of our donors' impact at Merc

After months of illness, loss and isolation, Jane Jones found herself overwhelmed by depression. She was unsure how to move forward. Donors helped her find a way.

“I was just lost and exhausted,” Jane says. “I had no interest in anything and really needed help.”

Jane’s journey stems from a long and difficult medical battle with leukemia. Complications from a bone marrow transplant kept her hospitalized for months. It was during that time that she lost her husband. When she finally returned home, grief, anxiety and depression left her feeling isolated and alone.

Jane’s life changed when she reached out to Senior Life Solutions, a program donors support with their gifts. Senior Life Solutions gave Jane what she needed. It provided transportation to and from meetings. In group sessions, she learned coping strategies and talked openly about her grief. She learned to set small, achievable goals to help her re-engage with life.

“They helped me see that life wouldn’t be the same, but I could keep growing — just in a different way,” Jane says.

When Mackenzie Murley welcomed her daughter at Mercy Health — Lourdes Hospital, she experienced firsthand the difference donor support can make. Donor gifts gave Mackenzie natural birthing tools that made her labor easier.

“I’ve seen how effective birthing balls can be,” Mackenzie says. “When I came in to have my baby, it was really important to me that we use them because I knew how much they could help.”

Donor generosity has ensured every labor room in Mercy Health — Lourdes Hospital now has its own birthing ball. In the past, these important tools were available to patients if requested, but not in the room by default.

Now, new moms have all options available to move their labor along. For new moms like Mackenzie, it means better care and more confident, supported births for families across the region.

Kerry Muhlenkamp likes knowing that his support for Mercy Health Foundation Greater Lima has a connection to his community.

“We like to donate where we can see the money being well taken care of,” he says. “With the Foundation, it’s not putting a check in the mail and wondering what happens to it.”

Kerry and his family have supported development of the Mercy Tots Childcare Center. For them, it was an easy choice.

“It’s a big need and support for youth always appeals to us,” he says. “They are our future, and we like to make sure they’re well taken care of.”

Having childcare in the community also has an impact on keeping a talented workforce. Kerry is proud that his support will have that effect on his community as well.

“I hope the Mercy Tots Center gets as many kids in there as it possibly can. I hope it helps keep good employees in the area and at Mercy Health — St. Rita’s Medical Center.”
