Last week we had the following requests for help and were able to say “yes, absolutely,” thanks to the generosity of our community. Thank you for giving us the means to be able to help folks help themselves.
A parent needed assistance with two substance abuse counseling sessions to finish a court ordered program in a “family preservation” case. This individual’s private insurance for counseling had been exhausted and there was no help available through DFCS. Counseling for parents is a key component of most DFCS cases but it can be extraordinarily difficult to access in small communities due to availability of therapists, costs, transportation and child care concerns. Happy we were able to assist.
Another need was presented to us for newborn assistance. A relative placement case where the parents are already caring for a one year old and an infant sibling due any day. Their asks were modest - a baby monitor, some swaddles and sleep sacks, a white noise machine and double stroller. With proceeds from “A Night to Foster Hope” we were able to assist this family with all of these additional needs.
We thank you always for your support.
May is National Foster Care Month though I’m not sure why is celebrated for only one month out of a year. There are many ways you can assist families experiencing foster and kinship care as well as those at risk - and we are happy to connect you if you would like additional information.
