Did You Know?

The elegant, Black-necked Stilt has some seriously impressive legs! In fact, these wading birds have the second longest legs compared to body size of any bird in the world — only Flamingos have longer legs in proportion to their bodies!

Those long pink legs help stilts wade through shallow water as they search for tasty treats like insects, tiny fish, and crustaceans.

And here’s something extra exciting…
Baby stilts are out in the park right now!

Unlike their striking black-and-white parents, stilt chicks are fluffy, well-camouflaged, and surprisingly quick on their feet shortly after hatching. Keep your eyes low to the ground near shallow water and muddy edges — you might spot one taking tiny steps through the marsh.

Dragonfly Wings are Incredible Things!
The four wings of this dragonfly, photographed at Winding Waters Natural Area, can work separately, in pairs or together. They allow the insect to travel in six directions – upward and downward, forward and backward, and side-to-side. The wings are also very powerful, acting like tiny jet engines as they propel the dragonfly in short bursts of up to 30 mph. The thing that will blow your mind – all that maneuverability and speed is achieved with wings only 3 micrometers thick – a little over 1/10,000th of an inch!
