Gulf Fritillary caterpillars are known for their bright orange color with black spines. They feed exclusively on passionflower vines. The plant's toxins make the caterpillars distasteful to birds and lizards.

July Volunteer Spotlight!
Featuring... Animal Care volunteer, Anna Small
Our amazing Animal Care volunteer, Anna works on Tuesdays. She has been here since the beginning of last Fall and is a very valued member of the animal care team.
Anna was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and came to America when she was 7 years old. She lived in Pittsburgh, PA until moving to Boynton Beach in 2020. She started volunteering at Daggerwing so she could learn something new and meet people in the community. Anna’s favorite thing about volunteering at Daggerwing is learning about the different animals and their habitats. Her favorite animal at Daggerwing is Fritz the gopher tortoise! Anna makes her some very special salads and loves watching Fritz enjoy them. She even brings in special treats like strawberry tops and bits of papaya for her!
In her free time Anna enjoys swimming and taking long walks at different local parks. She also enjoys cooking different cuisines, her current favorite is Mediterranean inspired eats! We asked Anna what would surprise people most about her and she had a very interesting response. “People might be surprised to know that I enjoy listening to heavy metal music. Although jazz is a second favorite :)”.
Thank you very much for all you do, Anna! The animals sure appreciate it!
