Decluttering, Organization, and Older Adults

An essential step towards home organization is decluttering the environment. Most of us tend to hold onto objects we no longer really use, need, or even want longer than we should. But older adults have had longer to accumulate possessions, and anyone helping them with home organization may encounter resistance to the decluttering process.

It is essential to acknowledge that many people can be sensitive about their belongings. Possessions often hold sentimental value or evoke memories, making it challenging to let go. Discussing the importance of organization in a compassionate and understanding manner can help ease concerns and encourage well-being.

Offering reassurance that the sentimental value of belongings can still be cherished is crucial. A picture of a treasured object, for example, takes up little space but can evoke many of the same emotions if the physical object finds another home. Preserving important memories in photos or a tabletop book, or electronic frame ensures memories can be shared with family and friends without taking up too much space.

It may help to bring in a professional who has experience in helping seniors organize, declutter, and create a better space for themselves. And it may create a more enjoyable experience for everyone, too!

Organization and the Older Homeowner

Home organization is a good thing, especially for an older person.

As individuals age, maintaining an organized and clutter-free household becomes increasingly essential. Proper organization can significantly increase the safety and well-being of older adults and minimize the risk of accidents or injuries. Clutter is actually potentially hazardous, as it obstructs parts of rooms and creeps into pathways to create a tripping hazard.

A Time To Move are experts at de-cluttering, even for those not thinking of moving. And as a proud member of the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers (NASMM), the experts at A Time To Move have the experience, know-how, sensitivity and understanding of the unique concerns of older adults and their home environment.

A Time To Move Employee Profile: Charmaine Mullings
Position: Director of Training & Quality Control

Q: What do you like best about your job?

A: Everything! I get the privilege and honor of working with seniors, and all ages from younger couples on up. I just love everything about A Time To Move.

Q: What's the best thing anyone has said to you about the job you've done?

A: At the ending of the completion of a job, where everything has been put into the right place for them-- when they say it’s like a reconstruction of where they were coming from into their new home.

Q: What does TAKE THE WORRY & WORK OUT OF MOVING mean to you?

A: Our clients come from different backgrounds and situations. They are downsizing, or sometimes moving because they’ve lost a spouse. Moving can be emotional for anyone, and we are there for them. For hand-holding, for reassurance, and for letting them know everything will be okay. We’re good listeners– an extra pair of ears for our clients– and we’re there for them if they need to cry, or if they want to laugh. We’re there for them, no matter what.

Q: What does Coordinating Your Move With Care and Compassion look like?

A: Our clients may be stressed in the first meeting, feeling overwhelmed with emotions like “I can’t do this on my own,” or “How can I possibly get all this done?” But once they see how we work, and how we respectfully guide them through the process, that look of relief when you seem them realize just how much we can help them is very rewarding!
