Recently someone asked me not to use the term “Diaspora” because they found it offensive.

At first I didn’t really understand that because diaspora literally just means Jews living outside of Israel.

But then I started thinking about the actual meaning of the word.

Diaspora means dispersion. Scattering. Exile from homeland.

And maybe the reason it can feel offensive is because it’s inherently describing something tragic.

My parents are incredible people who could never imagine their only daughter would move thousands of miles away from them.
I am so thankful to them for instilling me with Jewish values strong enough to make this move.
But the story doesn’t end there. The real miracle happens almost 10 years later….

People keep waiting for me to become miserable in Israel.

For the excitement to wear off.
For the “real life” part to hit.
For me to stop getting emotional over Hebrew street signs and train stations and stupid little grocery labels.

But years later, I still look around sometimes in disbelief that this is my actual life.

Maybe gratitude and perspective really do change what feels difficult.
